This is the first Friday Feeler of 2019. It’s a new gregorian year, and like many of us, we have goals and visions; we’ve got things we want to achieve; we’ve got goals we want to set into motion; and we are ready to roll.
And there are those of us who have looked at the things we want to achieve, and have said, “That ain’t going on the list, I just don’t have time for that.”
I can personally identify with that because, recently, I had an opportunity present itself to me, and I remember that when I heard about this opportunity, I had an internal groan — a moan where I was like, “I do not have time for that. I’ve got places I want to go, I’ve got things I want to be doing, I’ve got a list in my head that’s heck of a length already. And you want me to add that to the list? I don’t have time.”
But you know that niggling feeling when you’re like,
‘Maybe I should just explore it…’
‘Maybe I should…’
So you know what I did? I got my journal out, and I wrote my obligations list — all the things I need to do, and the plans I had.
It kinda got a bit embarrassing when I looked at my list and it was really short. I was like, ‘LaYinka, for reals? That’s your OMG-I-haven’t-got-time list?’ And so it dawned on me that I was using, ‘I don’t have time’ as a guise to hide behind so I wouldn’t have to take up this opportunity because it was so good.
But truly, it wasn’t that I didn’t have time. I looked at this list, and I was like, ‘Dude, you’ve got a heck of a lot of time. You can totally do this.’ And I realised, it wasn’t that I didn’t have time for this particular opportunity. It’s actually that the time I do have, I’m not using it as best as I could, and that’s just the truth. That’s my truth, and I’m pretty sure that’s your truth, too.
If you look at your day…
How exactly are you spending your day?
What are you filling your time up with?
What are you saying yes to, that means you’re saying no to other things?
Get curious about this. Because when you examine how you’re spending your time, I think you’ll begin to realise that you have more than enough time. It’s how you’re using it that’s the problem.
So here’s my invitation:
- Get your journal out, or get a piece of paper out. However you like to write things down, get something out.
- Write your real got-to-do list, all the things you want to do.
- Enumerate how long these things would take you.
- Finally, track the next three days and how you use your time over the next three days.
– What are you doing daily?
– What are you filling your time with?
I’d like you to be honest about this, because with this honesty, you’ll see the truth, and the truth will set you free.
So get curious, be honest, track your time, and then decide:
What am I doing with my time?
Is this how I’m going to be using time?
How can I optimise the 24 hours that Allah (subhanahu wa ta’ala), in His wisdom, has given me to use every single day?
I’m pretty sure that when you do this exercise and zero in on how you use your time, you’ll find that everything on your to-do list, or even I-want-to-do list, can fit, because of the fact that you are conscious of how you’re using your time, you are prioritising how you’re using your time, and you know exactly what you’re saying yes to, in order to say no to certain things.
And I’m sure that when you realise there are certain things that you’re currently saying yes to, that means no to something else, you’ll make a mahoosive switch, and it’s that mahoosive switch that’ll have the impact you wanna see in your life in 2019, bi’ithnillah.
